The first Grand Slam of the 2024 season is set to begin in
less than a month’s time where players from all over the world will participate
and fight for the ultimate prize.
In the women’s singles category, the current world number two
Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus will be defending her crown as she lifted the title
last year after beating Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan in the final with a score
of 4–6, 6–3, 6–4.
Just like every big event, players will have to defend a certain amount of points and in the
Australian Open, it will be no different. The
current world number one
Iga Swiatek will be defending 365 points in the first
major tournament of the new season. Last year, the Polish tennis star was
knocked out after losing the fourth-round tie to Rybakina in straight sets with
a score of 6-4, 6-4.
On the other hand, defending champion Sabalenka will have
the biggest points tally to defend as she will be fighting to protect 2,470
points in the competition.
World number and America’s young tennis sensation
Coco Gauff
will be defending 520 points in the competition. She was also knocked out of
the competition after losing to Jelena Ostapenko in the fourth round with a
score of 7-5, 6-3.
