Emma Navarro has opened up about how challenging it has
been for her to shed the billionaire tag. Navarro is one of the few players
currently competing in professional tennis who comes from a billionaire family
background.
Her father, Ben Navarro, is a successful businessman. He
is the founder and CEO of the Sherman Financial Group, worth more than $4.8
billion, according to a Forbes 2025 report. Because she came from such a
wealthy background, many accused Navarro of being too privileged to play the
sport.
Navarro is currently taking part in
Wimbledon 2025, where
she cemented a spot in the second round after beating the Czech Republic’s
Petra Kvitova in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-1. Navarro spoke to
Tatler magazine before the start of Wimbledon, where she spoke in detail about
how she has been dealing with criticism regarding her father’s wealth. Navarro,
in that interview, which was published on June 30th, stated that her
idea to deal with such criticism is not to read ‘anything’. Navarro also stated
that she understands the fact that there will always be a focus on her family’s
wealth, but her focus is to maintain the right work ethic and follow the process.
“I don’t read anything,” she said. “I don’t read the
comments, the articles, any of that stuff. I don’t know what the fans are
saying. There will be headlines and they kind of mention that [her father’s
billionaire status] which is fine, but I didn’t grow up being handed things. We
grew up in a sort of traditional way. We’d get up at 6am on a Saturday morning
and go play tennis. Growing up it was a priority that we learnt toughness and
we learnt work ethic and how to be intentional and purposeful and live productive
lives so I don’t love being referred to as whoever with however much money’s
daughter. It’s a label I don’t really like.”
