Ons Jabeur is one of the tennis global stars and has made an impact in her home country of Tunisia.
The African tennis player is perhaps the most successful African tennis player in history. She reached two Grand Slam finals in 2022 (Wimbledon and US Open) and became the world No. 2, a ranking that no other African tennis player in men's or women's tennis had ever achieved before.
After her victory against Anna Kalinsjaya in the quarterfinals of the Charleston Open, Jabeur spoke with Tennis Channel about the popularity she has gained among Tunisian fans.
"It’s really amazing, you know. The part that changed a lot is, even going to have a coffee or something, people come and support me," Jabeur said. "Driving, people are shouting - Ons. I feel like Schumacher. Driving, you know," Jabeur laughed.
The 28-year-old athlete has generated interest among her compatriots to watch tennis. According to the world No. 5, football is the main sport in Tunisia, but thanks to her good results, many of her fellow Tunisians have started to follow tennis.
"It’s really amazing and what’s crazy in Tunisia is, they watch soccer – it’s the national sport in Europe, in Tunisia, and now people watch more tennis than that! Which is crazy!" said the 2022 Madrid Open champion.
"You can see in the cafes. They probably don’t know what the score is, but they are still watching. You know, to encourage me and that means a lot to me," Jabeur added.
