Away from the glare of the main courts,
Leylah Fernandez just under two years on from the US Open final run has not seen her career develop as hoped.
But is desperate to turn a corner starting at
Wimbledon this week, the 20-year-old will face Kateryna Baindl on Monday afternoon and could face Caroline Garcia in the second round with one goal in mind in singles.
"I just gotta start winning matches," Fernandez said bluntly as per
The Canadian Press. "It hasn't been the best year. Of course I want better results, I want to win, I want to have my ranking up."
Not putting too much pressure on
She still thinks she is moving in the right direction despite a slide in the rankings and is giving herself time despite it not going right at the moment being still at a young age.
A far cry from her opponent at Flushing Meadows in Emma Raducanu who has seen the spotlight constantly thrust upon her and has battled constant injury issues.
"It's still a development phase for me, I'm still figuring things out, and I think losing matches is a hard part of the game," continued Fernandez.
"I don't think it's going too well, the results speak for themselves," she added. "But every single day in training I've been improving, I've been getting better and that's the most important thing for me."
But in addition, Fernandez has found another outlet for potential success being doubles with Taylor Townsend and she has lauded it for match practice and giving her time on the court while singles doesn't go too well.
"I want to do well in singles like everybody but sometimes that doesn't work out," she said. "Doubles has given me an opportunity to work on my game while in competition and not just in the practice court. Hopefully soon I can translate that into singles."
