"I just want to say that I’m extremely shattered" - Kyrgios on Atlanta withdrawal

Nick Kyrgios was supposed to play in Atlanta last night but he was forced to abandon those plans stepping out on the court and apologizing to fans.

Nick Kyrgios was excited to return to playing tennis in North America as he played some spectacular tennis earlier in the year on very similar courts. The Australian is a former champion in Atlanta and he was absolutely gutted when it became apparent that he won't be able to go for his round one matchup against Gojowczyk.

He stepped out on the court and adressed the crowd saying:

“I just want to say that I’m extremely shattered that I’m not able to compete tonight. I’ve won this tournament once and I’m playing some of the best tennis of my career. All I wanted to do was come out there and give you guys a show and obviously see what I’m capable of, but I’m unable to give my best performance today. “I’m extremely sorry but I’m going to keep my hopes up and maybe be able to continue doubles with Thanasi this week."

As Kyrgios hinted himself, there is a chance he carries on with the doubles but it's highly unlikely as the knee seemed to bother him quite a bit. With the US Open so close, it's probably not worth risking it, even if it's a special event for him.
