Germany’s tennis star
Tamara Korpatsch has revealed that
meeting the former world number one Billie Jean King motivated her to do
wonders on the court.
The 28-year-old won the Transylvania Open after beating
Belgium’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse with a score of 6-3, 6-4.
Korpatsch, in a post on her official account on social media
platform X — previously known as Twitter — where she stated how meeting King
motivated her to perform better on the court.
"That day I met you at the US Open, you motivated me, I
promised myself I will make it one day and I just made it! Thank you
@billiejeanking," the German wrote.
The 79-year-old is often regarded as one of the greatest
players in the history of women’s singles tennis in the Open era. She ended up
winning 12 Grand Slam titles.
Her most successful competition was Wimbledon where she
ended up lifting the title six times. Her first and last major title came while
playing in London.
King won her first title in 1966 after beating Brazil’s
Maria Bueno with a score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
Her last major title came nine years later in 1975 where
she defeated Australia’s Evonne Goolagong Cawley in straight sets with a score
of 6-0, 6-1.
