America’s young tennis star
Coco Gauff has revealed that
fans sometimes mistake her for other black players when she signs them an
autograph.
The 20-year-old is currently taking part in the Omnium
Banque Nationale Canadian Open in Montreal.
While responding to a post on X — previously known as
Twitter — Gauff stated that fans have mistaken her for some of the previous black
players whenever she signs them an autograph.
“I sign autographs as myself but occasionally I am somehow
also signing as Sloane, Venus, Serena, Taylor, Alycia, and yesterday I got
Leylah for the first time lollll,” she wrote.
Gauff is coming on the back of securing an impressive title
triumph in the recently concluded Citi DC Open where she defeated Greece’s
Maria Sakkari with a score of 6-2, 6-3.
The 19-year-old has already cemented her place in the round
of 16 of the competition after beating Britain’s Katie Boulter in straight sets
with a score of 6-2, 6-2.
She will now face Czech Republic’s Marketa Vondrousova in
the round of 16 clash on Thursday.
Gauff will be hoping that her recent form will her get
closer to the ultimate objective of winning her first Grand Slam when she will
take the court later this month in New York for the US Open.
