Nick
Kyrgios joked about the claim that
Novak Djokovic had nightmares about Jannik
Sinner after the
Davis Cup defeat.
Serbia and
Italy faced off in the semifinals of the Davis Cup Finals, with the added
intrigue of it being the third meeting between Sinner and Djokovic in less than
two weeks.
The young
Italian defeated 'Nole' in the ATP Finals round-robin, and then Djokovic
avenged the loss in the final to claim the title. In their third encounter, it
was Sinner who prevailed in the singles, extending the series between the
Serbian and Italian teams to the doubles.
Djokovic
once again took the court to play doubles with Miomir Kecmanovic, while on the
other side, Sinner also played again, partnered with Lorenzo Sonego. The
Italians sealed the series with a great performance by Sinner, securing their
place in the final for their country.
The
24-times Grand Slam champion suffered two defeats on the same day, both with
Sinner as his opponent. Moreover, in the singles, Sinner saved three match
points against him, a situation where Djokovic could have closed out the match
but ultimately didn't. On social media, an account suggested that Djokovic
might have nightmares about Sinner after the challenging day, and
Nick Kyrgios
responded to the comment by laughing at the situation.
“Debatable
hahaha Novak I think has dreams of his bank account and his achievements and
sleeps like a puppy,” former Wimbledon finalist said.
Djokovic's
impressions after the match were filled with disappointment for not being able
to lead Serbia to further advancement in the tournament. However, he
acknowledged the effectiveness and high level of play displayed by Sinner in
Malaga:
“Yeah, I
mean, we know that he's got one of the fastest forehands in the game and he
puts a lot of spin and a lot of power in it. I wasn't surprised too much by
that,” world No. 1 said.
“I know
Jannik's quality, but, you know, I was thinking maybe he's gonna drop a little
bit, you know, in the doubles, but he didn't. He kept the level extremely high,
and at the end of the singles match, also third set, I had a lot of chances to
break him and was in his service games, but every time he needed he found the
serve.”
