World No.16
Jelena Ostapenko has praised the WTA for it's attempts at equaling their male counterparts in the ATP, particularly when it comes to scheduling and prize money.
The former Roland Garros champion is in action at the
Guadalajara Open Akron this week, where she defeated Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk in her opening round match.
Ostapenko lauds the WTA for the progress made over the last few years
"I mean, I think it's getting better and better with the quality and the prize money and all these things," said the Latvian when asked where she sees the WTA in a decade. "I think it's good that the WTA is doing better and trying to be similar to the ATP."
The former World No.5 stressed she had no high expectations for herself this week in Guadalajara, instead hoping to tackle each match one day at a time.
"I mean, I don't expect anything," she admitted. "I just take one match at a time. It's not easy to play here because it's altitude. But, yeah, I played quite well here last year, so hopefully this year I can play even better."
