Day Six of
Wimbledon unfolded with the conclusion of the third round, featuring American action led by
Emma Navarro and
Danielle Collins. The world No. 10 eliminated defending champion Barbora Krejcikova in a tight match, while "Danimal" could do little against an impressive Iga Swiatek.
On the men's side,
Brandon Nakashima and
Ben Shelton are the Americans set to take the court this afternoon, aiming to join the Round of 16 in the men's draw, where—so far—only Taylor Fritz has reached the fourth round.
Navarro topples defending champion Krejcikova in gritty battle
Emma Navarro played a solid, long-haul match to overcome defending champion Barbora Krejcikova in the third round of Wimbledon. The world No. 10 started a set down, but leveraged a lengthy encounter to physically outlast the Czech in the latter part of the match, securing her passage to the fourth round with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory.
It was a difficult match despite the former No. 2 not having much rhythm leading into Wimbledon. Nevertheless, the Czech's grass-court ability had brought her to the third round without difficulty, and against Navarro, she looked impressive from the start, taking the first set 6-2 after winning 70% of her service points, compared to a poor 49% from Navarro. The 2-time Grand Slam champion began the second set with an early break, and everything seemed set for a straightforward triumph.
However, the 23-year-old reacted. After being down 1-2 in the second set, she broke back and won five of the subsequent games, without needing to be overly aggressive against an opponent who wasn't in her best physical shape. Navarro had only 4 winners against Krejcikova’s 11, though the difference in unforced errors was even greater: only 4 for the American compared to a total of 17 for Krejcikova, which ultimately cost her the set.
The third set was a rollercoaster, with breaks for both players and occasional service stability. After both started by defending their serve, five consecutive breaks followed: two for Krejcikova and three for Navarro, who ended up taking the lead. The American grew stronger on her serve and ultimately closed out a tough 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory, where physical endurance was key against a Krejcikova who finished the match utterly exhausted. Navarro advances to the fourth round and will face 7th seed Mirra Andreeva.
Collins no match for dominant Swiatek
Danielle Collins could do little against the five-time Grand Slam champion Iga Świątek. The American had won their last encounter—two months ago at the Rome Open—but this time, the Pole simply gave her opponent no chances, securing a comfortable 6-2, 6-3 victory in just one hour and 17 minutes of play.
Swiatek was almost impeccable on serve, winning 86% of her first-serve points, compared to only 53% for her opponent. The world No. 4 maintained her consistency from start to finish, saving all 3 break points she faced, while converting 4 of her 10 break opportunities. Collins's errors proved costly for the 31-year-old star, who committed a total of 25 compared to only 10 from Swiatek.
The Polish player had faced serious difficulties in the second round against Caty McNally but this time delivered a much more convincing performance to advance to the fourth round. She will face 23rd seed Clara Tauson, after the Dane surprised 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina.
