Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka played out a marathon battle on Saturday night with the Pole sealing the 2024 Madrid Open and the fatigue was there to see as she had to apologise for losing her train of thought during the post match speech.
Swiatek sealed a 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 win over Sabalenka. After a three hour, 14 minute battle with a total of 237 points, Swiatek simply didn't want to say much afterwards finding it hard to string sentences together. She also apologised to the ball kids for her behaviour jokingly over the last two weeks in Madrid. But nothing can take away a first title for the World No.1 at Caja Magica.
But it shows the true toll that a match like this can take as she now moves forward to Rome and Roland Garros. She also took a dig at those who call women's tennis boring during her speech in a mic drop moment. A final that truly had it all.
"I want to thank my family who's watching, my sponsors, tournament sponsors, everybody who’s making this tournament possible. Also, volunteers, ball kids, sorry for the mean faces sometimes."
"And erm… yeah let’s… Oh! And thank you guys [fans], sorry I’m too tired, thank you for watching till the end and for amazing atmosphere. It’s always pleasure to be back in Madrid so I’ll be already looking forward for next year and yeah."
