Iga Swiatek sailed into round two after a swift one-hour win over
Jasmine Paolini 6-3 6-0 while Pegula did the same to Golubic 6-2 6-2.
Swiatek talked a lot about the tennis balls used at the
US Open and how little control they offer to heavy hitters like herself. She showed no issues today against Paolini thrashing the Italian swiftly. Swiatek went all out and wasted no time in taking the ball early and she had plenty of chances to do so.
The Italian doesn't have a good serve and it's quite weak allowing the Polish player to attack early in the rally. Paolini held her own okay in the first set losing it only 3-6 but the 2nd set was much more problematic. Swiatek was in a better rhythm and played overall better.
Her opponent tried to counter it with more aggression but only committed more mistakes which sped up the match even further. Joining her in the second round is
Jessica Pegula who smashed
Viktorija Golubic in straight sets.
The qualifier was no match for Pegula who blasted plenty of winners en route to the simple finish. Both of them are mong those players that are expected to make a deep run and could possibly win the event.
