Iga Swiatek romps on in this China Open. The 2023 champion is one of the big names left in the tournament and has successfully confirmed a 31st WTA 1000 quarter-final after a convincing display against Iva Jovic dumped the American out of the event 6-1, 6-3.
The Pole has not enjoyed her best season, but when she is on it, she is tough to beat. Swiatek began the event with a comfortable victory over Chinese wildcard Xinyu Gao before completing a stunning comeback against Donna Vekic, trailing 5-2 in the second set to prevail.
Her toughest test of the tournament on paper was supposed to be against the exciting 18-year-old talent that was Jovic, but Swiatek brushed her to one side without hesitation. After her third round showing, it was a much-needed confidence boost and dominant win to set herself up for another title charge.
Swiatek only faced three break points compared to the 12 created herself. She was dominant on serve, winning 71% of first serves and 64% of second serves, a stat that really kept Jovic at bay, who struggled dearly when not finding her first serve. The match was completed in 95 minutes, with Swiatek safely through to the China Open quarter-final for the second time.

Swiatek fires past Jovic

It only took 36 minutes for the 25-year-old to run away with the first set. She won eight of the first nine points, setting the tempo of the match and sending out a stark warning sign to Jovic for her to bring her best game to compete.
Swaitek quickly made it 3-0 before a dragged-out game on the Jovic serve saw one break point created, and it was converted by the clinical six-time Grand Slam champion who held her serve straight after to take a 5-0 lead. Jovic finally got on the board after saving two set points, but she was unable to overturn a 40-0 deficit, and with a fifth set point, Swiatek was in command.
The second set began in similar fashion to the first. Swaitek broke en route to a 2-0 lead. This time, there seemed to be some life in Jovic, breaking back to level at 202. Swiatek failed to take another brace of chances in the next game to once again seize the initiative.
At 3-3, Swiatek made her dash to the finish line. She broke the Jovic serve once again before surviving two break-back points to edge within one of the match. She did not wait to do it on her on serve, taking Jovic to deuce before a first match point was converted, and Swiatek is a WTA 1000 quarter-finalist once more.
It is the sixth time she has made it to this stage in 2026, with Aryna Sabalenka the only active player to have more wins at WTA 1000 level among active players. Swiatek will be hopeful of making it a fourth consecutive semi-final in this category of tournament, but she could face a certain Coco Gauff in that stage. Either her or Elise Merterns will challenge Swiatek in Beijing.
