Poland’s
Iga Swiatek has continued to show her dominance over
the rest of the players in the year 2023.
The 22-year-old has had a rather tough year on the court
where she ended up losing her top spot in the WTA rankings.
However, despite that, she has produced some outstanding performances
to show that she belongs to another level.
It is because of this reason that Swiatek increased her bagels
count to 20 this year from 18 last year. Bagels is described as a set where the
player beats his or her opponent with a score of 6-0.
Not only that but there have been quite a lot of instances where
the current world number two ended with a breadstick. Breadstick is a term used
to describe that a player won the set with a score of 6-1.
Swiatek is currently taking part in the Japan Open where she
has already defeated Japan’s Mai Hontama in the round of 16 with a score of
6-4, 7-5.
Despite that result, Swiatek might look at the year with
more regrets than moments of joy.
She ended up winning the French Open which was the highlight
of her year by defeating Czech Republic’s Karolina Muchova in the final with a
score of 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.
Other than that, she played in the quarterfinal of Wimbledon
and lost to Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina with a score of 7-5, 6-7, 6-2.
In the first Grand Slam of the year, the former world number
one suffered a fourth-round exit after losing to Elena Rybakina with a score of
6-4, 6-4.
The US Open was perhaps the most disappointing one for Swiatek
where she ended up losing the fourth round to Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko with a
score of 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
It was her defeat in the fourth and final Grand Slam that ended up becoming the primary reason for losing the top spot in the
WTA rankings to Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka.
