Ticket balloting for the
Wimbledon Championship 2024 has
already begun and has seen a huge demand from the fans.
The competition, which is the only major tournament to be
played on grass court, is one of the oldest in the history of tennis and
started 146 years ago.
According to the latest report, in a new turn of events,
Wimbledon authorities, who used to have postal ballots for decades, now turned
to email where they invited the fans to show their interest in the next year’s
balloting.
“Applications for the Wimbledon Public Ballot will be
accepted during a 15-day period from today, Tuesday 26 September, until 23.59
BST on Tuesday 10 October. All prospective applicants must register for a free
myWIMBLEDON account in order to be eligible to enter the Ballot,” read the
email.
Not surprisingly, there has been a great response to that
invitation. The initiative is also in line with the authorities’ effort to digitise
the Wimbledon ticketing in order to ensure that the tickets cannot be transferred
to other people.
The report further stated that the successful candidates in
the balloting will be informed in November about the result.
This year, the tournament was watched by millions on screen
and more than half a million on the courtside.
In the men’s singles category, it was Spain’s young tennis
sensation and current world number two Carlos Alcaraz who came out on top in a
five-set thrilling final against the current world number one and Serbia’s
legendary tennis star Novak Djokovic with a score of 1–6, 7–6(8–6), 6–1, 3–6,
6–4 to lift his second Grand Slam title.
In the women’s
singles category, it was the Czech Republic’s Marketa Vondrousova who stunned
the crowd favourite Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur in the final in straight sets with a
score of 6-4, 6-4 to lift her first Grand Slam title.
