Although the new
US Open mixed doubles format has drawn mixed reactions, WTA star
Emma Navarro appears ready to make the most of the opportunity, as she's teaming with ATP World No.1
Jannik Sinner at the controversial event.
Organizers of the US Open recently announced they would be changing the format of the mixed doubles event. Beginning at the 2025 edition, the mixed doubles tournament will take place the week before the singles draw kicks off.
Furthermore, several spots will be saved for top ATP and WTA singles stars, with several established mixed doubles teams missing out on a Grand Slam payday. In addition, the matches will be shortened to just four games a set as tournament organizers attempt to introduce a more fun, fast-paced style of play.
However, several in the tennis community were upset at these new developments. Fans have called it a "money grab" as they believe the US Open directors want to capitalize on the popularity of the top ranked singles players who choose to participate. Several doubles players have also spoken out against this new format, with many no longer considering the US Open a Grand Slam event.
Navarro in high-powered team with Sinner
Nonetheless, several singles players seem interested in the event and have begun forming teams with their colleagues. The likes of Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu, Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud and even Serbian great Novak Djokovic and compatriot Olga Danilovic have confirmed their participation.
American Emma Navarro will also be competing at the mixed doubles event, teaming alongside World No.1 Jannik Sinner. When asked to disclose their team's gameplan, Navarro revealed she would let Sinner do all the work.
"Yeah, I'm excited to play," said Navarro. "I think I'll try to make him hit all the shots and I'll stand over in the alley, and cover however many feet there are in the alley. Yeah, we might get the job done that way.
"Bu no, I'm excited. I think he's an incredible player, of course, and I think we'll have fun together. I'm excited."
The revamped US Open mixed doubles event will take place on Aug 19-20, a few days before the singles tournament kicks off on Aug 24, 2025.
