Iga Swiatek defeated Yulia Putintseva in two very close sets 6-4 6-4 and after the match, she was relieved to win against a player whose style doesn't mesh well with Swiatek.
Iga Swiatek got off to a great start at the Ostrava Open taking down Yulia Putintseva 6-4 6-4 and the Polish player was very happy about the win especially since she usually struggles with players like Putintseva. Swiatek enjoys playing aggressive tennis and attacking her opponents and with a quick player like Putintseva, it's very hard to find a balance between aggression and patience.
Swiatek admitted as much saying:
"It was very tough. She was running to every ball - it was really hard to finish her, especially with such a slow surface. She could reach everything and she was fighting to the end - even on match point I had to finish her, like, three times."
Swiatek despite a very accomplished career at a young age is still prone to some of the mistakes young and inexperienced players tend to make. She is capable of overhitting balls often and getting into error spells that quickly mess up her rhythm.
Today she was able to find the right balance and after the match she admitted having trouble with players like Putintseva:
"I'm really happy I won because normally it's really hard for me to play with such players. I like to risk and with risking comes unforced errors, so it's tough to get the balance between when to push and when to stay and wait for the opponent to miss."
