America’s young tennis star
Coco Gauff has admitted that now she is
trying to focus more on winning the match instead of celebrating each point.
The 19-year-old has always been animated on the court,
celebrating each moment that went in her favour.
Gauff was quoted in a report recently where she admitted that
now she is trying to let go of such moments in order to achieve big results.
“I guess in my past matches I was a little bit more
animated. I just didn't feel like the moment,” she said. “I'm not out here trying
to fake things too. I just didn't feel like I had to celebrate points off of
unforced errors between one of us. So it wasn't like I was hitting winners a
lot today. She's a tough person to try to get winners off of.
“I didn't really feel that need. Sometimes I did hit a
winner, it was more like a let-go moment than a celebrate thing. Even match
point, I thought I missed the ball. Yeah, I didn't hear the out call. So then I
was, like, Okay, I won.”
Gauff will be flying high after securing a title win at the Citi
DC Open where she defeated Greece’s Maria Sakkari in the final in straight sets
with a score of 6-2, 6-3.
The result will give the Atlanta-born a much-needed boost ahead
of the last Grand Slam of the year which is set to begin in less than a month’s
time.
Gauff’s best outing at the US Open was reaching the quarterfinal
last year where she was defeated by France’s Caroline Garcia in straight sets with
a score of 6-3, 6-4.
The current world number three’s next assignment is the Canadian
Open where she will face Britain’s Katie Boulter in the first-round clash on
Wednesday.
