Danielle Collins' recent comments about perceived misogyny surrounding retirement have not gone down well with a player and friend of
Andy Murray in
Liam Broady who said that the former World No.1 has had to deal with the same.
Collins said after defeating Caroline Garcia that she would not have to justify retiring from the sport like she is at the end of 2023 if she was a man.
"I find it so interesting, because I kind of felt like when I was announcing my retirement, everyone has been so, like, congratulating me and so excited for me, but then on the other hand, I feel like I have had to justify my decision a lot. I feel like if I was a guy, I probably wouldn't have to justify it that much," Collins said in her post-match press conference.
"I'm not sure you've seen the treatment of Andy Murray," said Broady who is friends with Murray in response on social media platform on X. This is in reference to Murray spending recent months being hounded by members of the media saying his legacy is being tarnished by him losing and asking when retirement will happen.
Murray finally admitted that he was unlikely to play past this Summer albeit he has since suffered a serious ankle injury so his return in any entirety is currently uncertain. "Yeah, I mean, I'm likely not going to play past this summer," Andy Murray said during his press conference in Dubai. "I'm not going to talk more about that between now and whenever the time comes for me to stop. But yeah, I don't plan on playing much past this summer."
