Shelby Roger made some noise at the 2021
US Open with a strong run at the vent that included a huge win over reigning number one Ashleigh Barty.
For Rogers, it's easily the best win of the year, possibly even career considering it was done on her home soil in the iconic Arthur Ashe stadium. However, after her loss, Rogers touched upon a topic that became a prominent subject after Soane Stephens shined light upon it a few days ago. The American player showcased what sort of social media abuse tennis players go through after every loss.
After her loss to Raducanu, Rogers said:
"Obviously, we appreciate the spotlight in those moments, but then, you know, you have today and I'm going to have nine million death threats and whatnot. It's quite polarizing to go from one extreme to the other. At this point in my career, I'd say I'm used to it but it's not easy, to say the least."
Despite all of that Rogers also highlighted that the positive support she received from fans vastly overshadows the online abuse that comes from time time. She also said:
"It's important to be aware that it does exist so we can prepaer & deal with it."
To close out she summed up her thought expressing that she always dreamed about being a tennis pro and reminded everyone that it's a dream worth having saying:
"I want you to play this sport, fall in love with tennis and not worry that it's toxic or miserable. I am so grateful for what tennis has given me.
