The
defending champion,
Elena Rybakina, announced her withdrawal from
Indian Wells
before her second-round debut against
Nadia Podoroska. The Kazakh had
previously withdrawn from the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships before her
quarterfinal match against Jasmine Paolini, but it was expected that she would
be fully fit this time.
Rybakina
has been one of the standout players of the year with two titles so far and
currently ranks third in the WTA Race. Details about her physical condition
have not been disclosed yet, and her exit from the tournament will be a
significant loss in her defense of the 1000 points earned from the 2023 title.
Rybakina's
unfortunate withdrawal from Indian Wells adds to the disappointment following
Rafael Nadal's exit just a day earlier, marking another setback for the
tournament, this time on the WTA side.
"It is with great sadness I must announce, I will not be able to participate at this year's Indian Wells tournament due to gastrointestinal issues. Those close to me know how much this tournament means to me and how much I wanted to come back and defend my title.
I would like to thank all the fans who came out here to support me and I am sorry they will not get a chance to see me play this year. Now I will rest and recover so I can come out and play and compete for my fans to the best of my abilities once again."
