Former
world No. 1
Garbine Muguruza married Arthur Borges, a fashion executive and
entrepreneur, in a beautiful ceremony in Marbella on Saturday. The couple, who
met in Central Park during the 2021 US Open, celebrated their love with an
intimate gathering of 90 guests, including friends and family from around the
world.
According
to the magazine Hola, Garbine Muguruza, who retired from tennis in 2023,
and Borges chose Marbella as the wedding location, where they had gotten
engaged in the spring of 2023. The guest list included notable figures such as
her former coach Conchita Martínez and former doubles partner Carla Suárez
Navarro.
"I was inspired by the golden era of Hollywood, by those dresses worn by Marilyn Monroe, by Elizabeth Taylor, which are elegant, beautiful, and flattering," said the 2-time Grand Slam champion, who organized a flamenco party in a private villa. "I love flamenco, and for the international guests, it was a way to welcome them to Spain, to the south, to this emotion and folklore. Nobody knew about it, it was a surprise for everyone!"
The
ceremony, held under a pergola adorned with bougainvillea in spectacular
gardens, was conducted in four languages: Spanish, English, Swedish, and
Finnish.
Despite her
retirement, Muguruza remains active in the tennis world. She frequently appears
as a guest at various tournaments and awards ceremonies and currently serves as
the director of the
WTA Finals, a tournament she won in 2022, which will be
held in Riyadh this year.
