Her road to the semifinal was not easy but Vondrousova was able to perform some great tennis while also getting lucky a little bit. She first defeated a very depleted
Naomi Osaka who played her worst match in a long time. Then she caught a lucky break by winning 5 games in a row against Badosa before the Spaniard was forced to retire due to a heatstroke.
Asked about that situation she said:
“I think she was exhausted. It’s sad the way it ended. For me, it’s good that I have some rest now, but it’s sad to see her like this.”
She was then asked about her sucess at the games to which she replied:
“It’s a dream, but it’s just the semi-finals. I am playing Elina next, also in the heat, which is going to be tough. She’s a great player, so we’ll see. But I am just happy for now."
Her next opponetn will be Elina Svitolina who similarly struggled with form before arriving to Tokyo. On that matchup she said:
“We’ve played a couple of times – I beat her the last one in Rome, but that was on clay and it’s different. She’s a great player – she plays a little bit similar to me, so it’s going to be game-to-game, and it’s going to be tough mentally.”
