Marketa Vondrousova came out of nowhere to reach the Olympic Games semifinals where she will face Elina Svitolina.
Her road to the semifinal was not easy but Vondrousova was able to perform some great tennis while also getting lucky a little bit. She first defeated a very depleted Naomi Osaka who played her worst match in a long time. Then she caught a lucky break by winning 5 games in a row against Badosa before the Spaniard was forced to retire due to a heatstroke.
Asked about that situation she said:
“I think she was exhausted. It’s sad the way it ended. For me, it’s good that I have some rest now, but it’s sad to see her like this.”
She was then asked about her sucess at the games to which she replied:
“It’s a dream, but it’s just the semi-finals. I am playing Elina next, also in the heat, which is going to be tough. She’s a great player, so we’ll see. But I am just happy for now."
Her next opponetn will be Elina Svitolina who similarly struggled with form before arriving to Tokyo. On that matchup she said:
“We’ve played a couple of times – I beat her the last one in Rome, but that was on clay and it’s different. She’s a great player – she plays a little bit similar to me, so it’s going to be game-to-game, and it’s going to be tough mentally.”
