"It's common courtesy to read up on the sport, especially the etiquette": Naomi Osaka says influencer improvement necessary amid viral video but praises use of social stars
WTA
Naomi Osaka has urged the social media influencers who continue to adorn the US Open to respect the sport's etiquette following their second round win over Katerina Siniakova.
The issue had become a talking point after Osaka's opening win over Anastasia Zakharova on Monday in which videos have since gone viral of some influencers not paying attention and using it as an opportunity to film videos and take pictures instead.
It is something that was also spotlighted during Wimbledon where as usual tickets were very much hard to come by albeit influencers seemed to find their way in and used as an opportunity in some cases to take photos in the stands and it raised big debate about this nearly as much as wildcards as of late.

Albeit after overcoming a mid match wobble to see off Katerina Siniakova and reach the third round in New York winning through 6-2, 5-7, 6-1, she was once again asked about this due to the virality of such clips.
But Osaka not only wanted the tennis to do the talking in these influencers reading up on etiquette, but also she sported a more understated outfit during her entrance to which she is gaining continued notoriety. From those who think it's excellent to those who criticise her for it.
The same goes for influencers and while she said that it is a huge positive for the game in terms of numbers, there does need to be a line where they do respect the game and don't just trampel over it to get photos and other such social media content.
"I think obviously if you come to a sporting event, you have to respect the sport," said Osaka in her post match press conference.
"I feel like it's common courtesy to read up on the sport, especially the etiquette. I feel like it could be a good thing for people to make the sport of tennis popular to their specific audience, but I think it has to be managed a lot better, especially in the situation like [my] first-round match."

Naomi Osaka discusses influencers.
"Overall, I think there is huge positives. You want people to continue to grow the sport. I just think it has to be in a way that everyone knows the rules and the etiquette."
"I was going to say, today, the umpire told everyone to be quiet - more than I've ever heard an umpire tell a crowd to be quiet.
"I do think that in my first match, I wasn't really paying attention. I normally just focus on the match and the court, but there was a moment where there was people shouting and stuff, and you could hear it quite clearly. I think it bothered my opponent, too."
