Elena Rybakina on beating Iga Swiatek in Rome: “It’s never good to finish a match like this. It was a really good match. I hope it’s nothing serious for Iga & I just wish her a speedy recovery.” Definitely not the way Elena wanted to win ❤️🩹
Elena Rybakina advanced at the Rome Open after Iga Swiatek retired early in the 3rd set and she wasn't very happy about the way she progressed.
No tennis player wants to win a match while the opponent retires. It's just not enjoyable and it certainly wasn't for Rybakina who advanced after Swiatek retired at the Rome Open last night. At 6-3 in the tiebreak of the 2nd set, Swiatek appeared to injure herself on a play with a lengthy medical timeout following between sets.
She returned with a strapped leg opting to play a few more games but then retire. It was clear that some kind of muscle injury happened and with Roland Garros near, playing on it would only make it worse. Speaking immediately after the match, Rybakin admitted it's not a good way to finish a match:
“It’s never good to finish a match like this. It was a really good match. I hope it’s nothing serious for Iga & I just wish her a speedy recovery.”
