Britain’s tennis star
Emma Raducanu has opened up about life after the retirement of former world number one
Andy Murray. The 37-year-old, who has struggled with fitness concerns throughout his career, is regarded as one of the greatest British players in the history of
men’s tennis in the singles category.
Murray’s illustrious career finally came to an end recently
after the Paris Olympics, where he participated in the doubles category. He and
his partner Dan Evans lost to the pair of America’s Tommy Paul and Taylor Fritz
in the quarterfinals in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-4.
Raducanu is currently in New York to participate in the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year—the
US Open—where she talked about life in the tennis world after the retirement of the former world number one. She was of the opinion that any sport, especially tennis, moves on from the people who left it and suggested that it ‘doesn’t feel different at
all’.
“It doesn’t feel different at all,” she said. “Tennis is
unforgiving in that sense. No matter who you are, it just moves on. Of course…I
watched him win this tournament but yeah, it’s fast paced like life - it’s old
news the next day.”
Raducanu will be hoping to have an impressive outing in New
York as it is the same venue where she announced herself on the global stage
back in 2021 when she lifted the title at the age of just 18. The most
impressive aspect of her performance in that competition was the fact that she
started the tournament through the qualifying round and still managed to go all
the way and lift the title, beating Canada’s Leylah Fernandez in straight sets
with a score of 6-4, 6-3. She will begin her 2024 campaign against the 2020
Australian Open winner, America’s Sofia Kenin.
