Simona Halep is back to the BNP Paribas Masters in
Indian Wells and she started off with a strong straight set win against Marta Kostyuk.
The win featured a slow start by Halep who was trailing 1-3 early but rallied to win the first set in the tiebreak. In the 2nd set, we saw the full force of Halep who smashed her opponent easily for a place in the 3rd round. Halep won the event in 2015 and she is very comfortable here confirming it after the match:
"Always when I come back here, I feel great. It's really nice to be healthy again and to compete at this level. Playing in October here, it's so special."
For Halep the most important thing is being healthy and playing regular tennis which she did not do much this year. Her fitness is also much better than in New York and she is looking like a formidable opponent. She said:
"I missed a lot playing tennis at this level this year because I've been injured and for many months, I couldn't play matches. I came here a little more aggressive than normal and I'm trying to improve my game and myself. My attitude was not great but I'm going to keep working and it's just a pleasure to be back and to win a match at Indian Wells."
