Bianca
Andreescu and
Emma Raducanu will be rivals in the first round of the
Miami Open
and share some aspects in their respective careers.
An
interesting match for fans will be played between 20-year-old British Raducanu
and 22-year-old Canadian Andreescu. Both managed to win the
US Open as
teenagers, and share being born in Canada and having Romanian ancestry.
Additionally, both faced the difficulties of being Grand Slam champions at a
very young age (18 and 19 years old respectively), although Andreescu has had
better results after her first major, neither has been able to meet the
expectations that were expected.
Regarding
this, the Canadian said during 2022:
I've thought
about the parallels, but I don't go crazy,” “It's just a really weird
coincidence,” she said while admitting her desire to face Raducanu.
“I watched her win the US Open, and I was really happy
for her because I won it basically around her age,” she also said during Rome.
“Obviously, she was playing a Canadian [Leylah Fernandez], so that was really
nice too. She's a really great player, so I'm expecting a really good match. I
remember saying, ‘I want to play her,’ and it looks like I got my wish.”
On her side, the British athlete also had
words for her next rival:
“I thought Bianca was playing incredibly well,” said
the world No. 72 “I think her physicality is one of her strengths, how good she
is moving, how low she stays. I think that's really cool. And probably
something I can learn from myself.”
They have
previously played against one another at the 2022 Rome Masters, where Andreescu
emerged victorious with a score of 6-2, 2-1, after the British player withdrew
due to an injury. The winner of the first round in Miami will be facing Maria
Sakkari, the tournament's seventh seed.
