The 2022 Bett1 Open Berlin champion is out with
Ons Jabeur beaten by
Jule Niemeier on Tuesday afternoon 7-6(4), 6-4 with the home hero delighting on home soil.
The win is Niemeier's third career top 10 win and second on grass. It also shows the German who has since tumbled down the rankings still as a grass court threat.
She reached the Quarter-Finals of Wimbledon last summer and in this case, this was her first career top 10 win since beating Petra Kvitova in May at the Madrid Open.
Scoring the upset in one hour and 35 minutes, she was more efficient on break point opportunities despite Jabeur hitting more aces and winners.
She saved two set points in the ninth game of the opening set, which she initially trailed 5-3 before winning the last four points of the tie-break.
In the second set, she broke serve and held onto the lead throughout, she finally claimed it after Jabeur tried to force a 5-5 scoreline showing determination to get it over the line.
Next is Bianca Andreescu or Marketa Vondrousova, this now gets played on Wednesday due to rain delays.
"It's an amazing feeling, to be honest," Niemeier said. "I lost in three sets the last two years, so when I won the first set, I was like, 'At least I can play three sets again like the last two years. I was pretty positive, and it feels amazing to get the win today."
