Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur achieved another milestone during her impressive run at Wimbledon 2023.
The 28-year-old finally got revenge for a defeat in the final last year after beating Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina in the quarterfinal of the competition on Wednesday with a score of 6-7, 6-4, 6-1.
That victory also made Jabeur the first women’s player after America’s Serena Williams to book back-to-back semifinal berths at the mega-event.
The former world number one and 23-time Grand Slam winner achieved the feat during the 2018-19 editions.
Before defeating her last year’s final opponent, Jabeur got the better of Poland’s Magdalena Frech (6-3, 6-3), China’s Zhuoxuan Bai (6-1, 6-1), Canada’s Bianca Andreescu (3-6, 6-3, 6-4) and Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova (6-0, 6-3) in the first, second, third and four round fixtures respectively.
She will now face the current world number two Aryna Sabalenka for a place in the second consecutive Wimbledon final.
Looking at the previous meetings between the players, things do not look great for Jabeur as she has only beaten her next round opponent once in four meetings, suffering three defeats in the process.
Both players previously met in the quarterfinal of Wimbledon 2021 where Sabalenka came out on top in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-3.
