Jasmine Paolini capped off an incredible week in Slovenia to win her maiden title in Portoroz with a 7-6(4) 6-2 win over Riske.
A brilliant week for Paolini in Portor concluded with the Italian winning her maiden WTA trophy. She played stellar tennis all week long taking down some strong opposition and in the final overcame a very solid Riske. The American finally played some great tennis again and started the match off well. She was up 3-1 after a shaky start by both that included 3 losses of serve in the first 3 games.
Riske continued to play well adding another break later on to take a 5-2 lead and it seemed like she was on the verge of winning the first set. However, Paolini came back to make it 5-5 before we ended up in a tiebreak. In it, it was Paolini again who proved better winning 7-4.
The first set was a replica of her tennis all week long. Very good with shaky spells that often needed fixing but each time Paolini was able to do it. The 2nd set was another competitive one but this around Paolini was the one that took the early lead 2-0. Riske would fight back to 2-2 but the Italian was relentless and once again went up 4-2.
In the end, she broke Riske one more to take a 5-2 lead ending the match with 6-2 in the 2nd set. A very convincing win for Paolini who in all fairness was the best tennis player in Portoroz this week and she won her first trophy deservedly. Congratulations!
