Two-time Grand Slam runner-up Jasmine Paolini recently announced her withdrawal from the WTA 500 Adelaide International after an intense week representing Italy in the United Cup in Sydney. The world No. 4 led her team to the quarterfinals, where they were defeated by the Czech Republic.

Italy had an excellent performance during the Round Robin stage, winning all their matches. Paolini secured singles victories over Belinda Bencic (6-1, 6-1) and Chloe Paquet (6-0, 6-2). However, in the quarterfinals against the Czech Republic, she fell short against former French Open finalist Karolina Muchova (2-6, 2-6) in the opening match of the tie.

Paolini takes precautionary rest after intense week

Despite the defeat, it was a positive start to the season for Paolini. The player, who turned 29 on January 4, was initially scheduled to compete at the WTA 500 Adelaide International, where she would have been the top seed. However, she decided to take a break, as she announced on social media.

“I’m very sorry to announce my withdrawal from Adelaide. I need a bit more time to rest and recover after an intense week in Sydney,” she shared on her social media. “I look forward to seeing all the amazing fans in Adelaide next year. Jasmine,” read her Instagram stories.

Paolini’s next challenge will now be the Australian Open. Her withdrawal from Adelaide appears to be more of a precautionary measure to avoid physical issues, and she is expected to compete in the main draw in Melbourne next week.

A year ago, Paolini started her season strongly at the Australian Open, earning her first wins at the tournament after four consecutive first-round exits and reaching the fourth round. She eventually fell to Russian Anna Kalinskaya (4-6, 2-6). That performance set the stage for an impressive run in the weeks that followed, culminating in her first WTA 1000 title at the Dubai Duty-Free Tennis Championships.
