Former Australian player Jelena Dokic recently spoke at the UN Women's event in Australia. The 41-year-old has been very vocal about the abuse she received from her father, especially during her early playing days. In a picture that was shared on the social media platform X — previously known as Twitter — Dokic can be seen speaking on the stage in Australia during a UN Women's event.
Dokic retired from professional tennis in 2014. Her highest rank in the WTA rankings was fourth and finished her career with six titles at the seniors level. However, she failed to win a single major event. Her best outing in a Grand Slam came at Wimbledon in 2020. She was knocked out after losing in the semifinal to the former world number one America’s Lindsay Davenport in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-2.
The best performance for the Osijek-born star in a Grand Slam came in 2000 when she played in the semifinal at Wimbledon but lost to former world number one America’s Lindsay Devenport in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-2. She also played in the quarterfinal at Wimbledon in 1999 where she lost to America’s Alexandra Stevenson with a score of 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.
Dokic then lost in the quarterfinal of the French Open in 2002 to former world number one America’s Jennifer Capriati with a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. Her last appearance in the quarterfinal of a major event came in 2009 when she lost to former world number one Russia’s Dinara Safina in the last-eight clash of the Australian Open with a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Dokic did manage to play in the final of a Grand Slam in the doubles category in 2001 at the Roland Garros. However, she and her partner Conchita Martínez of Spain lost to the pair of the Argentina’s Paola Suárez and Virginia Ruano Pascual in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-1.
