Jelena Ostapenko has done it again! The former Roland Garros champion has a hoodoo over
Iga Swiatek that the former World No.1 can't seem to snap out of. It was a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win from the Latvian.
It is now a bagel Head to Head record of sorts as Ostapenko leads 6-0 all time against the imperious clay court queen and it is another year of disappointment at the
Stuttgart Open.
It is also a round earlier than last year as she lost to Elena Rybakina in the semi-finals. Ostapenko now faces Ekaterina Alexandrova for a spot in the final with the remaining ties of Gauff v Paolini and Sabalenka v Mertens to come.
The Head to Head started back in 2019 when she thrashed Swiatek on a surface which in reality Swiatek apart from in Juniors has never been good on in grass 6-0, 6-2. But it has been the alarming results since she has ascended to the top of the game that have been the issue.
She lost to her in February in the Doha semi-final in one of her most one-sided defeats 6-3, 6-1 as well as at the US Open, Dubai and Indian Wells. But a feat that makes it even more alarming is that it is the first time on clay. In a tournament too that she has made her own.
She had the opportunity to break at 4-2 in the third but she didn't take it. Ostapenko reversed the momentum switch and then took the win from there. Truly remarkable.
One of the most one-sided tennis Head-to-Head's and remarkably one of the most surprising but given the all round game that Ostapenko possesses there are reasons she can inflict this kind of damage on Swiatek and why it will likely continue. Always a peril going forward for Iga and one she will hope to finally reverse going forward.
