The last time a player won Canada and Cincinnati back to back was Evonne Goolagong in 1973 🇦🇺 Jessica Pegula can make history tomorrow 🏆
Jessica Pegula will play in the final of the 2024 Cincinnati Open on Monday evening and she became the latest to slam the scheduling of the tour en route to the US Open.
Pegula has played two weeks on the spin and her opponent Aryna Sabalenka has played three with many also doing the same if they didn't skip Canada after the Olympics.
She won Canada this time last week and is in another final this week albeit she won't play Cleveland or Monterrey so in reality it isn't compared to the clay court season when they went straight into Roland Garros. But it continues complaints surrounding this issue. “I’m not crazy about two-week tournaments,” she said after reaching the Cincinnati final.
“Of course, when the weather is bad and the playing time is compressed it’s terrible and you wish you had more time. Other times you’re like, ‘Why is it two weeks?’”
“It can go either way, I don’t know which is better. I think we’ll continue to see tournaments grow and offer more money. But two long tournaments in a row and then the US Open is not ideal.”
But it is a sentiment echoed by Iga Swiatek earlier this week in a damning view on the current state of the tour from the top player. “I’ve been kind of an advocate saying that we shouldn’t like, I don’t know, be pushing and pushing for us to play more," said Swiatek earlier this week.
“Obviously it’s not our decision but for sure, I think we have too many tournaments in the season. It’s not going to end well and it makes tennis less fun for us, let’s just say.”
