Jessica Pegula continued her superb season by beating Madison Keys in San Diego advancing to the semi-final.
It was another strong match from Pegula who had issues at times but for the most part, the American was simply too good for Keys from the baseline. Not many players can strike the ball as well as Pegula has this year and Keys while capable of it, did not have enough throughout the match.
Pegula broke Keys in the first game of the match and from there continued to play well and hold her serve. She faced some break points but saved them and wasted chances to go up a double break as well. All in all, it was just very solid and was excellent behind her first serve.
Keys was pretty good on her serve as well but she did not hit it enough to make a difference. Every second serve was attacked with great success. Keys proved better in the second set with her serve improving as well. Pegula misfired a bit early and found herself down 2-4 but she turned things around rather quickly.
Pegula missed a big chance at 4-4 to go up 5-4 when she wasted a 40-15 advantage in the game but things settled into place a few games later when she took a 6-5 lead and closed it out 7-5. The American is continuing to build up her form ahead of Guadalajara and the WTA Finals in Forth Worth.
