The third seed is one
of the favorites at first Grand Slam of the year.
The current world No. 3
Jessica Pegula needed just 65 minutes to defeat the young Ukrainian Marta
Kostyuk. The top American player dropped just two games and won by 6-0, 6-2 to
the 20 years old tennis player. Despite Pegula only having 54% of her first
serves, she was excellent in the exchanges, and just conceded her service one
time, at the end of the second set.
"I think I wasn't serving great today but I thought I served smart
enough to get through some tough games.”
The 27 years old American
player broke her opponent 6 times, and connected 12 winners, against 18 of her
opponent. But the difference was in the accuracy shown by the players, with
Pegula hitting just 9 unforced errors, while the Ukrainian racquet up 39
unforced errors.
It has been a great
tournament for her, until now, the third seed just conceded eleven games, and
won all her matches in 2 sets. But in the fourth round, she’ll faces a bigger
challenge, against the former 2021 French Open champion,
Barbora Krejcikova. The
Czech has won her three previous matches in the tournament in two sets and
without complications, showing a great level, in addition that she hasn’t
conceded more than 5 games in each match.
About her next rival, Pegula
had a few words: “I’ve watched her quite a bit. She’s had a great couple of
years. I know last year she was a little bit hur. It seems like she’s kind of
finding her confidence again.” This is gonna be the first match between these
two players, since they just face each other in doubles.
“I have a little bit of
an idea but I’ll definitely have to maybe watch more of her matches, but also
just happy to be through to the fourth round and just excited for the next
match.”
