Tennis fans have lambasted the comments made by the former world number one and now famous commentator John McEnroe about Poland's Iga Swiatek's appearance.
The 23-year-old is already regarded as one of the best players in women’s tennis in the singles category. She cemented her dominance even further after winning the French Open 2024, following a thumping win in the final over Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-1.
During the final, former world number one McEnroe commented on Swiatek’s appearance and suggested that she should apply more makeup after being associated with French brand Lancome.
"Did JMac seriously just ask if Lancôme signed Iga if she’d throw on a little makeup for the right price? He’s unbelievable!!! Unhinged! 🤬," wrote one fan. “I'll let someone else handle McEnroe wondering if Iga Swiatek might "throw on a little makeup" if she'd accepted the Lancomb deal because... wtf?" another user posted. "Sick to my stomach hearing McEnroe casually criticize Iga for not wearing more makeup during this final ... WTF," another one wrote.
It was Swiatek’s third consecutive French Open title. She lifted the 2022 title at the Roland Garros after beating America’s Coco Gauff in straight sets with a score of 6-1, 6-3. She then went on to defeat to Czech Republic’s Karolína Muchova with a score of 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.
