Karolina Pliskova and Maria Sakkari advance at the US Open

Karolina Pliskova and Maria Sakkari got off to a good start at the US Open winning their 1st round matches in straight sets.

Wimbledon finalist Karolina Pliskova was in cruise control in her first-round matchup against native Caty McNally 6-3 6-4. Pliskova was playing great tennis from the start similar to the one she played at the Cincinnati Master's where she reached the semifinal.

She served well enough hitting a couple of aces and dominating the 1st serve rallies. On her 2nd serve, she had some issues especially in the 2nd set that dragged on a bit more than it should have but in the end, she was able to win it comfortably. Pliskova was simply too strong from the baseline for McNally who could not handle it.

Joining her in the 2nd round will be Maria Sakkari who had a lot of issues in her match against the up and coming Marta Kostyuk. Sakkari lost her serve early in the match but pull it back quickly. After that she slowly found her rhythm winning the first set with 6-4.

Sakkari was great on her first serve and good enough on her 2nd to win the opening set. She took an early lead 2-0 in the 2nd set but surrendered it not long after that. She was able to consolidate her shaky play a bit after which she cruised to a 6-3 2nd set win. She faced 10 break points saving 8 while converting 5/6 on Kostyuk's serve.
