Nick Kyrgios was given the chance to play in front of his biggest crowd in a long time and the Australian did not disappoint, kind of.
In his match against Roberto Bautista Agut, there were plenty of popcorn moments from Kyrgios albeit most of them had little to do with tennis. His opponent was on the other was stellar all night handing Kyrgios his worst Grand Slam defeat ever 6-3 6-4 6-0.
After playing composed for three games Kyrgios started throwing tantrums getting annoyed by the fact that he had to walk to get the towel. He complained to umpire Carlos Bernardes:
"I don’t want to walk side to side. I
still have to get it. Like, it’s f**king 70 degrees out here, bro. I
don’t want to walk back and forth, back and forth. How many extra steps is that? That’s so stupid."
Bernardes was not impressed firing back "It's part of the game."Annoyed by the response Kyrgios fired back:
"It’s not part of the game. So texting someone is part of game, too. Taking 20 minutes bathroom break is part of the game, yes? That’s part of the game, too. Everything is part of the game. I need to take a s**t - ah, part of the game. F**king stupid, man."
The comment was a clear reference to what happened earlier in the match between Tsitsipas and Murray which derailed Murray's inspiring effort. It's unclear why Kyrgios mentioned it but he was not happy having to play very late at night in humid and slow conditions on the centre court.
Kyrgios ranted about the toilet break from that match several times during the match even to umpire Carlos Bernardes who remained calm in the situation. A funny moment happened when Bautista Agut opted for a toilet break with Kyrgios telling the umpire:
"Let’s see how long Bautista goes to the change room for… someone else went for 20 minutes today."
When the Spaniard returned Kyrgios said to Bernardes '“How long did it take… 3 minutes?” to which Bernardes responded with "3 minutes". Before serving in the next game Kyrgios told Bautista: "You only took 3 minutes, that's good" to audible laughter.
In the end, the match finished and Kyrgios shook hands with his opponent leaving the arena disappointed with the result. However, he still did not let go of the bathroom completely. See for yourself below.
