Reigning Australian Open champion
Sofia Kenin was made to work in the first set of her opening round match at the
Yarra Valley Classic but prevailed after
Camila Giorgi retired to hand the American the victory.
The World No.4 returned to Melbourne Park on Tuesday for the first time since winning her maiden Grand Slam title a year ago, and squared off for the first time against the hard-hitting Italian. After racing to a 3-0 lead in the first set, Kenin's level of play dipped as Giorgi reeled off four consecutive games to establish a 4-3 lead.
However, the fourth-seeded Kenin settled her nerves to hold serve, and eventually break a frustrated Giorgi to lead 6-5. The American successfully served out the set and looked to have all the momentum on her side.
It was not to be for Giorgi, however, as the Italian conceded the match during the first set changeover. The World No.76 retired, citing a left thigh injury. Kenin will advance to the round of 16, where she faces the winner between compatriot Jessica Pegula and German Mona Barthel.
