The former US Open winner
Kerber faced off against a tricky opponent in
Tomljanovic but the former champion had no issues in her match. Even early in the match she managed to break her opponent but struggles on her own serve prevented her to jumping out to a lead. Even so, solid play from the baseline allowed the German to clinch the first set 6-4. The 2nd set was even more convicing for Kerber who stepped up her level. Tomljanovic collapsed in the 2nd set and allowed the German to finish off the match with 6-4 in the 2nd set.
Another convicing victory at Day 1 of the US Open was orchestrated by
Kristina Mladenovic. The French player faced off against Baptiste and defeated her in straight sets. Despite the straight set victory Mladenovic had to battle hard in the 1st set in order to secure it. It took 12 games with the end result being 7-5. The 2nd set was a bit easier for the French player who continued to play well on her own serve but also raised her level when receiving. All in all she won 7 of the 10 break points which she faced allowing her to cruise to an easy 6-2 2nd set victory.
