The first player to secure a victory at this year's US Open was Czech player Marketa Vondrousova who reached the 2nd round after destroying Minnen 6-1 6-4. A ferocious start by the Czech player was backed up with strong serving a great baseline play. Her opponent entered the match nervous and commited many errors to surrender the 1st in only 25 minutes. The 2nd set was more competitive but Vondrousova controlled the pace of it and finished off her opponent in only 64 minutes.

Varvara Gracheva also reached the 2nd round after defeating Badosa from Spain in straight sets. The Russian player controlled the match from the start and won the 1st set 7-5. The 2nd set was a bit more difficult as the Spaniard managed to jump out to an early lead but composed play from the Russian allowed her to fight back. In the end she managed to win the 2nd set 6-4 as well.

Another player who secured a victory was Sasnovich who had to go the full distance in order to progress to the 2nd round. Her opponent was hometown hopeful Di Lorenzo and she started off great. Her 6-2 victory was a surprise but her play in the set said otherwise. The 2nd set was a hard battle between the players as we ended up in the tie break. In it Sasnovich prevailed with a tough 8-6.

In the final set it was all Sasnovich who destroyed her opponent 6-0. It was a good effort from Di Lorenzo but ultimately she couldn't defeat a better player.
