The 2022 resurgence of Madison Keys continued on Tuesday at the Australian Open, as the American shocked reigning Roland Garros champion Barbora Krejcikova to reach the semifinals.
Keys looked dominant in her 6-3 6-2 win over the fourth seed, hitting an impressive 11 aces in their 85 minute encounter. The World No.51 seems to have rediscovered the form that saw her finish runner-up at the 2017 US Open, dictating play with her powerful groundstrokes.
After a cat-and-mouse game that finally saw Keys seize the break at 3-2, the 26-year old never looked back as she raced to close out the opening set. A pair of breaks saw Keys garner a 3-0 lead in the second set, before her Czech opponent broke back to reduce the deficit to 3-1. However, it proved to be an effort in futility, as Keys dictated play from the baseline before obtaining another break at 5-2. The Illinois native proceeded to serve out the match, hitting an impressive 27 winners to just 21 unforced errors.
Keys returns to the Australian Open semifinals for the first time since 2015, and she will face the winner between compatriot Jessica Pegula and World No.1 Ashleigh Barty.
