A couple of interesting results happened in Melbourne as Madison Keys,
Barbora Krejcikova and
Jessica Pegula advanced to the quarterfinals.
Madison Keys faced off against
Paula Badosa and the American comfortably won that match with 6-3 6-1. From the start it was obvious Keys had herself going as she took an early 2-0 lead against Badosa whose most powerful weapon, her serve, was off. Badosa committed more double faults than aces in this match and it was clear she was off.
Keys kept bombarding her from the baseline and easily cruised in both sets to a victory. Joining her in the quarterfinals will be Krejcikova who thrashed
Victoria Azarenka in another great performance. Azarenka was not feeling too well in that match dealing with neck issues that have plagued her in the past. Krejcikova was able to take advantage of that and cruise 6-2 6-2.
A bitter end for Azareank who looked really sharp so far at the event and could have gone deep. The 3rd quarterfinalist will be Jessica Pegula who was in terrible form ahead of the
Australian Open but found some form at the event. She took on
Maria Sakkari and she handled her well. The first set was a close one ending in a tiebreak but after that Pegula took over.
It was a 6-3 in the 2n set for a very important win for Pegula who once again reaches the quarterfinals in Melbourne.
