The first round of the
Australian Open resumed on Tuesday, with top stars
Anett Kontaveit and
Iga Swiatek advancing to the second round without much difficulty.
Kontaveit fought off a late challenge from
Katerina Siniakova to progress with a 6-2 6-3 victory, firing 26 winners as she dictated play for most of the match. The sixth seed has been in great form lately, reaching the semifinals in Sydney last week.
Swiatek made quick work of Harriet Dart in her opening round match, requiring just 72 minutes to record a 6-3 6-0 win over her British opponent. Despite being broken in her first service game, the 2020 Roland Garros champion fought back to claim the first set. With that in her pocket, it was business as usual for the seventh seed, who dominated the second set to close out the match.
Kontaveit will face the winner between Australia's Astra Sharma and Clara Tauson of Denmark, while Swiatek will battle Sweden's Rebecca Peterson in the second round.
