US Open runner-up
Leylah Fernandez bowed out early at the
Australian Open on Tuesday, losing to local wildcard Maddison Inglis in straight sets.
The Canadian struggled during most of the match, which allowed Inglis to capitalize and escape with a 6-4 6-2 victory. Although both ladies were even to start proceedings, it was the Aussie who drew first blood, obtaining a crucial break in the seventh game. Fernandez was unable to create any opportunities, as her play was hindered by unforced errors that allowed Inglis to take the first set.
Buoyed by a supportive home crowd, Inglis broke the 23rd seed's serve in the opening game of the second set. The 24-year old raced to a 4-0 lead, before Fernandez was finally able to win a game. Nonetheless, this proved to be too late as the Australian held on to close out the match, advancing to the second round after 83 minutes.
Fernandez looked out of sorts on court, spraying errant shots and winning only 38% of her second serve points. The 19-year old failed to capitalize on any of her three break points, committing a whooping 30 unforced errors to just 8 winners. Alternatively, Inglis remained composed as she kept the ball in play, frustrating her opponent and forcing more errors. The World No.133 will face American qualifier Hailey Baptiste in the second round.
