With the Australian Open just around the corner, it's the perfect time to remember the most successful tennis players at the first major of the season. Margaret Court, Serena Williams, Steffi Graf and other iconic players made history by triumphing at the Oceania Grand Slam.

Held in Melbourne since 1905, the first major of the season has witnessed unforgettable sporting feats in the intense heat of the southern hemisphere summer;

1| Margaret Court

Among the historical champions, the first woman to stand out is none other than Margaret Court. Playing at home, the phenomenal tennis player holds the record of 11 singles titles, a milestone that emerged as one of the most difficult to reach. Court dominated between the 60s and 70s, winning a tournament that at that time was played on grass.

2| Serena Williams

Another legend at Melbourne Park is Serena Williams. The younger Williams has a not inconsiderable record of 7 Australian Open titles, placing her as the most dominant at the Slam in the modern era. Between 2003 and 2017, Williams demonstrated a level of consistency and greatness that endeared her to Australian fans.

3| Steffi Graf

Completing the podium of the greatest is the incomparable Steffi Graf. The German was able to lift the trophy four times in Australia, marking a golden era of tennis between the 80s and 90s where she brought the tennis world to its knees, sweeping almost all the competitions in which she participated.

But not all the big stars have had an easy ride in Melbourne. For example, the legendary Martina Navratilova, considered one of the best in history, with more than 18 Slams to her credit, found it much harder than she would have imagined to win this trophy. Despite dominating in other Grand Slams, she only managed one victory in Australia, in 1983.

With the 2025 edition fast approaching, the question is: Will Aryna Sabalenka be able to lift her third consecutive trophy in Melbourne and make it into the tournament's great history?
