Bianca Andreescu could only lament her continued bad luck as she was defeated in a comeback win by
Jasmine Paolini at the
US Open. It was a 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-4 win in favour of the Italian.
Andreescu has been drawn against the fifth seed at three majors this year. She has lost all three meetings and continues to be a thorn in her side as she aims to reach her previous heights.
She pleaded with the Italian in a hilarious moment amid the heartbreak to let her win next time. She said hilariously: "Let me win next time, god," to which Paolini could only laugh and say 'sorry' and complement a familiar foe.
“I’m exhausted now," Paolini said post match. "It was a really tough match. She’s a great champion. We played three times this year. Every time is a battle.
"I have to say I enjoy playing here in front of this energy. This crowd is unbelievable, thank you for staying here and cheering for us. It was an unbelievable atmosphere.”
For Andreescu, it was a lot better than in recent weeks where she has struggled for form. But it is still not her sterling best which saw her previously win the title back in 2019.
2019 is always the aim and albeit she has shown glimmers of that previous form, it is yet to come. But only just returning from injury, Andreescu will hope to now build towards the latter half of the season and 2025. Just she will hope that Paolini isn't the foe that awaits. Being unseeded doesn't help her cause and it has just been how the chips have fallen whether in the opening or third round.
Paolini now faces Karolina Pliskova, while Andreescu wonders what could've been after a third loss in a row to the Italian fifth seed.
