The first round continues at the Cincinnati Open with victories for Leylah Fernandez, Diana Shnaider and Anna Kalinskaya among others on Wednesday evening.
Fernandez had to toil to win through as she defeated Yue Yuan in a 2-1 sets win. She claimed it 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in just over two hours. The Canadian who had a poor homecoming last week in Toronto went 3-1 up initially in the opening set but Yuan came back to go 4-3 up winning three games in a row. She won five in a row in the end to seal the set as Fernandez hardly won another point after 3-3.
In the second set, Fernandez finished it off in an opposite result. She was on the verge of defeat at 4-2 but the Canadian turned it around to go 5-4 up before sealing the set.
The third set saw Fernandez lead 3-1 with a break. But she cemented it at 4-2 with a hold en route to claiming the win. Next up is the returning Elena Rybakina in the second round. Shnaider is in the same section who now faces Ashlyn Krueger who took down Donna Vekic yesterday.
Shnaider continued the misery for Shuai Zhang and her own form continued as she eased through 6-1, 6-4 in just under an hour. An emphatic win for the new World No.20 who keeps rising.
Anna Kalinskaya hasn't been the best as of late retiring injured from Wimbledon. She didn't play Washington and retired during the Canadian Open. But she was back to winning ways on Wednesday evening.
She won through in just under two hours against Katerina Siniakova in a tough test. After slumping to a 6-1 opening set loss, Kalinskaya breezed through the next two 6-2, 6-3. Next up as a result is Paula Badosa who took down home hero Peyton Stearns.
They sit in the same section as a certain Coco Gauff who faces off against Yulia Putintseva tomorrow in the second round.
